Nyamira County is working to create mapping products, to be used for the sustainable development and planning of this rural, but rapidly growing Kenyan county.

During #OSMGeoWeek, OSM aims to contribute through remote mapping of roads and forest.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Please map all roads and forest areas. The area is rural, so the mapping should go quick, but make sure to carefully examine your entire tile.

Because the tiles are fairly small, do not stop tracing right at the tile boundary, simply continue until road you trace gets to another road, or the forest ends. Do not take a tile next to one someone is already working on to avoid duplicating features.

For road mapping focus on the major roads. Please use the Highway Tagging Africa guide and descriptions/criteria for classification and concentrate on what it describes as "Primary", "Secondary", "Tertiary" and "Unclassified" roads. Most of the roads you will map will be either tertiary or unclassified, please review that guide and focus on those.

For forests separating farmlands use "landuse=forest". Most of this land is an agriculture area with many small farm plots so we do not need to map them individually , just map what isn't farmland, like the forest areas. Do the best you can and look at completed and validated squares for guidance and examples of what and how to map.

MapBox imagery has coverage of the entire area. Some of it is panchromatic. Bing may have higher resolution in some areas. Add source=MapBox,Bing in changeset comments. The imagery on the southwest of the task is somewhat obscured by clouds; mark these tasks as complete, but with a OSMTM comment about the clouds.

If you have any questions about mapping and would like to speak with other mappers in real time please try our HOT IRC Live Chat Area Replies can take a little while so leave the browser window open.
