The American and Ugandan Red Cross Societies want to comprehensively map the cities of Gulu and Lira in the north of Uganda to better understand and respond to the large and small scale disasters afflicting these cities. In particular, they want to prevent fires from spreading amongst the tightly packed, straw roofed houses characteristic of these cities and train taxi drivers in high-traffic areas to serve as emergency first responders to traffic accidents. Maps will help the Red Cross to better plan activities and enable local communities to better organize and represent themselves before local government bodies.

Remote tracing will be supplemented by on-the-ground data collection by Red Cross volunteers and communities participating in our disaster risk reduction program. So while you may not know what you’re tracing (is it a store? Is it a clinic?), contributing Guluers and Lirans will be able to tag it if you trace it.
