MSF teams working in northern Nigeria respond to a variety of different health needs. These include emergency response to disease outbreaks across the area. Accurate maps of the area will assist emergency teams with epidemiological analysis, disease surveillance and logistical planning.

The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.

This task was generated through Mapswipe. All satellite imagery has been reviewed for containing buildings.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Take a look at this Niger State pinterest board to get to know Niger state a bit better and see what you will be mapping in this task! And feel free to use this tracing guide to help you map.

Note: There are rare cases of settlements and buildings outside the task boxes, please map them too.

Please use the Bing imagery as it was used on Mapswipe to identify the areas with buildings. You are encouraged to compare with DigitalGlobe or Mapbox services as well.

Please outline settlements with more than two buildings / structures as residential area. Tag as Landuse Features=Residential Areas in iD or landuse=residential in JOSM.

Try to trace around all of the compounds, not just the buildings; the compounds often extend well past the inner circle of houses but are definitely part of the village. You should be able to see compounds as they usually have a fence around them.

If residential area shapes already exist, but do not encompass all the buildings in the village or town, please adjust the boundary accordingly.

Buildings are generally squared and round huts with stra or tin roofs. They should be tagged as Building Features=Building in iD and building=yes in JOSM.

There are keyboard shortcuts for tracing circular shapes in iD (the O key) and JOSM (also the O key).

Roads and other features

Your are not requested to map anything other than buildings and settlements in this project, however if you choose to, please check the Highway Africa Tag page for advice on tagging roads and see the OSM map features page for more information on general OSM tagging.

For JOSM contributors

This project was created using data from MapSwipe, therefore the task shapes are irregular and task boundaries will not load automatically in JOSM. To show the task shapes, you will need to download a GPX file and add it manually to your editor. Please download here the global grid.
