The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.

Through the MapGive project, the Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) of the U.S. Department of State is providing the OpenStreetMap community access to updated satellite imagery services to help assist with humanitarian mapping.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Access to this imagery is limited by the NextView license agreement.

You need to review and acknowledge the agreement.

Don't hesitate to mark tasks as done if they are complete, even if you didn't have to map anything on it!

Informations on Imagery

Please use Digital Globe imagery for this project.

This imagery is from Digital Globe’s GeoEye-1 and WorldView-2 satellites, and is made up imagery taken on February 22 (WV02) and February 28 (GE01). The imagery has been orthorectified for terrain corrected geographic precision. Additionally, the imagery has been contrast stretched using a custom stretch and processed into a Tiled Map Service (TMS) for performance.

To map the buildings, please use:

  • In the ID editor: label the area as “Building”, then correct for right angles with the “S” key

  • In JOSM: from the Tags/Memberships window, click “Add” and use the tag “building=yes”; then correct for right angles using the “Q” key

Road Network

You should'nt have to add many roads! If you see wrong located roads, don't hesitate to adjust it (if it's not in the axis of the road). In that case, if your road is extending outside of your square, please save your work regularly in order to avoid conflicts.

Tags that you shouldn't use : highway=primary, highway=secondary or highway=tertiary* : these are the main roads that connect towns. You shouldn’t need to create them for this project.

Tags that you could use : highway=unclassified* or "Minor routes" : for those roads connecting villages and hamlets

  • highway=residential: within residential zones (with the exception of major roads)

  • “highway=track” (roads or paths which connect fields only or leading to the river) and “highway=path”(roads too narrow for a 4-wheel drive vehicle to pass)

The most important thing is to maintain consistency in the network. Every road should connect to another of greater importance and not to isolated roads.

See the Wiki page Highway Africa Tag for more information on the cartography of route networks in Africa. For a concrete example, see the cartographic guide for route networks in S. Kivu
