Author: Missing Maps

Requesting organization: Pan American Development Foundation (PADF)

This activity is led by the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and Perpendicular and is expected to facilitate the identification of communities most vulnerable to natural hazards, especially floods and landslides. Located along steep hillsides, these densely populated communities often lack adequate roadways, storm drainage, retaining walls, pedestrian paths, and evacuation route signs, making residents especially vulnerable during rain storms. Your mapping contributions will inform and empower communities to prepare for and respond to disasters. By making this information available freely to the public, humanitarian assistance providers will be able to use the information to better understand the location and number of residents living in precarious conditions.

In Guatemala, PADF is training members of the community in disaster preparedness and response skills. PADF is also assisting residents to form Community Disaster Response Committees (COLRED). PADF is supporting these committees to become certified partners of the Guatemalan national disaster response system. PADF and Perpendicular are working with community members to develop a more detailed understanding of the most critical threats and vulnerabilities that the community faces. By mapping these threats, the community will be able to understand who is most vulnerable and ways to mitigate risks.

The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur. PADF is a member of the Missing Maps Project.
