Replacement for Project #2352 - same exact squares

A local OSM person has contacted us and asked us to provide map data to build the OSM resource in the disaster affected area. Disaster responders are using another geographic data set, we are mapping to aid the local OSM community. It is filled with skilled, dedicated folks who know OSM and are working to increase its usage and acceptance.

UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS

Project Specific Mapping Notes

  • A lot of the roads and waterways look they have been mapped with Mapbox, be sure to check Mapbox imagery for any mapping or fixes.
  • This is an OSM Community requested mapping project to improve the road network in the areas most affected by Tropical Storm Otto.
  • Please download existing OSM data and run JOSM validation, please fix easy to fix road network issues as soon as possible. This is the main focus of the project, quickly fix easy to fix road network issues.
  • [Edited: Forget it ever said anything about mapping roads, just JOSM Validate the road network.
  • Easy to fix has priority over new map data. Upload often.
  • Strava Combined Layers will help here. It should be in your default JOSM list. It looks like this: "Strava cycling and running heatmap" tms[3,17]:http://globalheat.strava.com/tiles/both/color2/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
  • Imagery is old and a patchwork, work with Bing as reference as much as possible, other layers might be informative too
  • Always respect existing mapping. Please do not change anything but easy, obvious fixable things. Leave anything you do not understand.
  • Try to pick task squares where no one else is working next to it.

Roads and Paths

  • [Edited: No mapping, just validating]
  • Add missing fords and bridges, they are important!! That is how you fix overlapping road/waterway warnings.
  • Please make sure roads are mapped as completely as possible by connecting them to the main road networks where ever possible.
  • Very short segments that do not connect to anything should just be ignored, mapped or not.
  • Short segments of a road or path that you cannot see through the trees but seem very likely to exist should be mapped to keep the road complete
  • Try and map a little beyond your task square so the person who maps the task square next to yours can easily connect them.
  • Always connect roads to other roads where they meet and never end roads on Residential area polygon edges.
