- Author: Missing Maps
- Requesting organization: American Red Cross
There are a number of great organizations working in different parts of Malawi to support measles vaccination efforts and other development initiatives. The American Red Cross is a member of the Measles & Rubella Initiative, which seeks to eliminate these diseases. We will be conducting a measles campaign in Malawi in spring 2017. This HOT task is for one of the noticeable gaps in the mapping coverage. These are populated areas near Lilongwe that lack data in OSM. We want to fill them out to help complete the map - partly for the Red Cross, but also for the benefit of others.
The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.
Through the MapGive project, the Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) of the U.S. Department of State is providing the OpenStreetMap community access to updated satellite imagery services to help assist with humanitarian mapping.

This imagery is from Digital Globe’s WorldView-3 satellite, and is made up imagery taken on October 24th 2014. The imagery has been orthorectified for terrain corrected geographic precision. Additionally, the imagery has been contrast stretched using a custom stretch and processed into a Tiled Map Service (TMS) for performance.
