  • Author: Missing Maps
  • Requesting organization: Ger Community Mapping Center
  • Priority: Medium

Building an accurate road map is highest priority, followed by buildings and other features. Naming streets, neighborhoods, buildings, and adding points of interest will also be helpful. The ger districts are the areas most in need of mapping.

HOT has been working with locals to improve the map of Ulaanbaatar since 2013, in general to make it easier for the city and citizens to plan for the delivery of urban services like solid waste removal, clean water, and access to health care, education and public transportation.

Mapping Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia #hotosm-project-2254 #MissingMaps #MappingMongolia
When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Imagery:

Please compare both Bing and Mapbox. Mapbox appears to have more recent imagery across parts of UB, but does not extend to the far north, and other places, Bing seems to have updated their imagery from previous projects and seems to have coverage where Mapbox does not. Use your best judgement and align objects to existing features.

Buildings:

Buildings are a mix of (typically) rectangular permanent structures, which should be tagged Building in iD and building=yes in JOSM; you will also see many (usually) white round objects, these are the traditional living structures called "gers" and should be tagged as building=ger.

There are keyboard shortcuts for tracing circular shapes in iD (the O key) and JOSM (also the O key).

Roads:

Most roads are traced, but if you do find new/un-mapped roads they will most likely be a Residential road in iD / highway=residential.in JOSM.

Misc:

You are welcome to map other features like waterways and landuse; however, notice it is not being requested in this project and other mappers may not continue that river you start, etc. You may want to come back after the project is complete to map those features.

Please do not delete any other data from this area if you do not know what it is.
