The basemap is completed for the #MapLesotho project. This task forms part of a collection of 11 new tasks (10 districts, 1 city) to move the mapping from a national to a local district level.

Completion of this task will result in 100% coverage for all roads, waterways and buildings with all features being accurately mapped to ensure a high level of quality. An important element of this task requires that JOSM validator is run each time a tile is selected to correct errors from previous mapping attempts.

#hotosm-project-1938 #maplesotho #mlmftask
When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Using JOSM? Please use the dedicated preset.

Validate As you Map!

  • Run JOSM Validator when you open a tile to identify any errors in the existing data
  • You are free to use OSMOSE and/or KeepRight to check the work in the area where you have mapped for errors

  • Primary Imagery source is Bing.
  • Secondary Imagery source is Mapbox.
  • In JOSM use Alt+1/2 to switch between imagery layers
  • In iD Editor use Ctrl+B to switch between imagery layers

Project specific guidance

  • It is ok to "split" task squares - Sometimes a task square will have a lot detailed settlement mapping. If you think it would help to make the task square smaller so the mapping could be finished in a more reasonable time, use the "split" link above the task square comment box.
  • Only mark a tile as complete if the following criteria is met:
  • All buildings, roads & waterways are mapped
  • All of the above are accurately mapped and aligned correctly to the imagery

  • Agricultural Land Cover in rural areas. Mark out visible arable production or ploughed fields, as landuse=farmland or improve the accuracy of those already drawn.
  • Other areas of vegetation should be mapped as landuse=forest or natural=wood or natural=scrub as applicable. Please improve the shape of areas drawn by others if needed.
  • Economic landuse. Map retail areas as landuse=retail if mainly containing shops and stores. Use landuse=industrial for areas with factories or warehouses.
  • Residential areas. Map these areas using landuse=residential by drawing around each residential area. Please map these accurately by following the boundary edge of an area if it is discernible or alternatively mapping to within 2-5 building widths of the edge of the outer most buildings. See below for an example. resarea

  • Note, if residential areas are named, they should have separate areas mapped and the names of each applied to the area drawn using the name= tag. Example, housing areas each with their own name.

  • Additional items to tag when identified on imagery. When found, the following should be mapped in as much detail as possible from the imagery e.g. parks, cemeteries, schools, fuel stations, churches etc.
  • Additional items to tag when identified on the ground. If you are on the ground in Lesotho and can gather any of the following information to add to mapped features please do so: name, address, shop type, contact details of businesses or services. Of particular interest is pharmacies.

  • The outline of all mapped buildings should be accurate so please map any unmapped buildings accurately and correct/replace any previously mapped buildings which do not accurately represent the building shown in the imagery. Please accurately outline all the buildings you can find. The outline should be for the full size of the building even if it is partly covered by trees in the imagery.
  • All visible buildings need to be mapped, including small sheds and buildings under construction, so please map any unmapped buildings skipped by other mappers
  • If buildings are very close, but do not actually touch each other, try to map them close to each other without letting them connect or share nodes with each other, roads or residential area outlines.
  • If you have personal knowledge of a building, please add that information to the building, like the name or type of building (hospital, school, gas station, etc)
  • For round buildings in JOSM & iD Editor, draw a triangle with the 3 points on the outside edge of the building and with the building selected, press "O" to make it round.
  • For buildings with right angles, with the building selected, in JOSM, press the "Q" key, in iD Editor, press the "S" key to "square" the corners**. resarea
  • If using iD, the first time you map a building you will use the "Building" category and then at the bottom of the list select "Building" again, this is the most generic building tag we can use as we almost never can tell the more specific use of any building from imagery alone.
  • Where visible, draw any walls & hedges around buildings that show where a property boundary extends to by using the barrier=wall or barrier=hedge tags

  • Map roads by following the center line of the road. Adjust previously mapped roads by using the Improve Way Accuracy tool in JOSM by selecting a road and clicking W to turn on the tool. Here is a YouTube video showing how to use the tool. resarea
  • Watch out for unconnected pieces of road. Roads, paths, tracks etc should always connect to another road/track or path.
  • Apply speed limits where known using the Max Speed tagging
  • Apply road surface detail using the Road Surface Status tagging

General mapping guidance

  • Invalidated task squares - You might get a notice that a task square was "invalidated" that almost always just means someone found a few more things to map and they did not have time to map them in. No worries, it is part of the process and happens all the time. If you have to stop mapping before you have mapped everything use the "Unlock" link instead of "Done"
  • Leave a comment - use the comment box for a tile to assist later mappers and tag @username of previous users if leaving feedback for others. Remember, be nice :)
  • Ask questions - if you have questions, please ask other mappers for assistance. The front page of this HOT Tasking Manager website offers a few ways to ask or if you are at a mapping event, raise your hand and ask.
  • You are making a real difference mapping - Every contribution matters in a real, tangible way.
  • Tweet about the tiles you complete using #MapLesotho and the task link
