  • Please align objects to the Bing imagery. This and the other projects in the Sri Lanka Disaster Resilience series were initiated using the Bing imagery. Therefore, to maintain placement of objects relative to the existing data, please use Bing for alignment. Mapbox may still be more recent in some places, so continue comparing the two sources and use your best judgement.

  • The Gampaha District is an urban and agricultural district located on the Western coast of Sri Lanka just north of Colombo in the Attanagalu Oya River basin. This area is very prone to flooding with important human, material, and financial damages. The goal of this task is to map all the roads, buildings, agricultural lands, and other infrastructures.

  • This data will then be ground-truthed and augmented with attributes by local teams, students, and local governments who will be mapping the district as part of the Open Cities project to help local disaster managers better prepare and plan for floods as well as to provide more detailed exposure data to develop basin investment plans through the climate resilience improvement project of the World Bank.

  • This project focuses on the area around Minuwangoda.

  • If you would like to ask specific questions to the local community who is working on the ground, you can find the mailing list and facebook group here

  • This area is a mixed urban and agricultural land and some data already exists. Some may have been traced with older imagery or contributed from the ground please check feature history before doing major changes.
