The Hadjer Lamis area of Chad is very poor, and there is an unusual burden of disease and malnutrition amongst the people who live there, which contributes to high mortality in children under five years old. In order to better understand, assess, and respond to this, we need to know more about the population.

MSF teams are mapping villages and taking their names on the ground, but identifying all of the inhabited areas and counting the structures is much more efficient from aerial photos. Knowing where all of the villages are scattered through the savanna helps us to map them, and counting the buildings within each village gives us a quick and fairly accurate method to estimate population. This is important to help MSF understand the spread of disease and identify areas of highest need.

The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.

Trace and tag residential areas and the buildings inside them.

Please outline residential areas (more than two buildings / structures) and tag as Landuse Features=Residential Area in iD and landuse=residential in JOSM. Try to trace around all of the compounds, not just the houses; the compounds often extend well past the inner circle of houses but are definitely part of the village. You should be able to see compounds as they usually have a fence around them.

Buildings are generally round huts and should be tagged as Building Features=Building in iD and building=yes in JOSM.

There are keyboard shortcuts for tracing circular shapes in iD (the O key) and JOSM (also the O key).

This is the first stage of a three part process. As road networks are hard to identify in the sand, we will cover these in the next task when we know where settlements are located.
