MSF's South Kivu emergency response unit will be conducting a vaccination campaign on the island of Idjwi in South Kivu, Congo (DRC) in response to an outbreak of measles. They will begin in one week and accurate digital maps will assist them in making sure they get sufficient coverage to halt the progress of the disease. Building mapping is vital to this process as it gives the team an understanding of how people are distributed across the island and also a population estimate, so resources can be planned to ensure an effective vaccination programme.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is a priority country for the Missing Maps project. South Kivu is a province of DRC that, for decades, has faced unceasing humanitarian crises. With constantly changing conflicts, seasonal disease epidemics and a population in constant flux, many international NGOs have permanent presences here.
The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.

Please click on a square to start mapping. When you have mapped all the buildings, please mark it as done. The roads will be mapped in a subsequent task.
Use Bing imagery for this project.
Simply digitise the outline of all buildings in each square and make sure you either SQUARE (shortcut key = 'S' in iD editor) the corners of square/rectangular buildings OR ROUND OFF/CIRCLE (shortcut key = 'O' in iD editor) any huts.
Then tag as building=building (in iD) or building=yes (in JOSM).
There is a good video on how to map buildings here, if you are new to editing OSM.
If you see a building that looks like it is incomplete (roof missing for example), please still tag it as a building.
Please do not delete any other data from this area if you do not know what it is.
