The Netherlands Red Cross has six branches in the Caribbean. Red Cross Saba is the local branch on Saba. The branch is involved in disaster response on the island, and provides first aid trainings. Detailed maps of the project area are vital to properly undertake assessments in preparation of hurricanes and in the event of a hurricane.

The Missing Maps project aims to map the most vulnerable places in the world (affected by humanitarian crises: disease epidemics, conflict, natural disasters, poverty, environmental crises). Building on HOT's disaster preparedness projects, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate pre-emptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur.

Through the MapGive project, the Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) of the U.S. Department of State is providing the OpenStreetMap community access to updated satellite imagery services to help assist with humanitarian mapping.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

There are two tasks for this project, because we have two satellite imagery sets that cover part of the island. This task uses the worldview imagery from 2012 for this project that will be loaded into the tasking manager. The other task [link] uses the worldview-3 imagery from 2015, but it only covers part of the island. Alternatively you can switch to the Bing Imagery from 2010-2011, but it has substantial cloud cover.

Simply digitise the outline of all buildings in each square and make sure you either SQUARE (shortcut key = 'S' in iD editor) the corners of square/rectangular buildings.

Roads that lead to buildings should be traced and tagged as stated below.

Building tags:

  • building=building (in iD)
  • building=yes (in JOSM).

Road tags

  • highway=residential (in iD and JOSM)

Cloud cover

There is considerable cloud coverage around Windwardside (center of the island). Please trace whatever is possible, also by using the Mapillary images. For tasks that include cloud coverage, mention 'cloud coverage' in the comment when you save the task, and mark the task as done.

Imagery Details

This imagery is from Digital Globe’s WorldView-1 satellite, and is made up of an image taken on April 16th 2012. The image is orthorectified for terrain corrected geographic precision. Additionally, the image has been contrast stretched using a custom stretch and processed into a Tiled Map Service (TMS) for performance.
