  • Author: Missing Maps
  • Requesting Org: Red Cross Climate Centre
  • Map Feature: Buildings Only

The George Washington University, with support from with GFDRR, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, and other partners, have created a system that combines machine learning and Forecast-based Financing to effectively integrate information, decisions, and consequences. When upstream rainfall and reservoir levels indicate that inundation downstream is likely, a message is automatically transmitted to the local Red Cross, who can release funds from the Forecast-based Financing system to activate preparedness measures before the flood hits.

#3336 Missing Maps: Pyapon, Myanmar #2

  • Author: Missing Maps
  • Requesting Organization: American Red Cross

Help Valdiate!

The Red Cross is mapping the Ayeyarwady Delta area in Myanmar as part of a multi-year mapping and data readiness activity to better understand where critical infrastructure and roads are to inform decision making during potential disasters. As recently as 2008 a cyclone killed at least 77,000 people with over 55,900 missing, and left about 2.5 million homeless. The map data will help the Red Cross to better understand where people live in relation to potential hazards so that we can help them be prepared for the disaster and so national decision makers can make better decisions in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

About the Tasking Manager

OSM Tasking Manager is a mapping tool designed and built for the Humanitarian OSM Team collaborative mapping. The purpose of the tool is to divide up a mapping job into smaller tasks that can be completed rapidly. It shows which areas need to be mapped and which areas need the mapping validated.

This approach facilitates the distribution of tasks to the various mappers in a context of emergency. It also permits control of the progress and the homogeneity of the work done (e.g. elements to cover, specific tags to use, etc.).

New to Mapping?

Just jump over to OpenStreetMap, create an account, and then visit the LearnOSM tutorials on the Tasking Manager and the iD editor. Alternatively check out the MapGive website which also provides information on the Tasking Manager and mapping. Once you have read up on how to map, come back here to help map for people on the ground!
