The Peace Corps program in Senegal is requesting assistance in creating a base map for the city of Kedougou. The map data will be used by the local health system to track incidence of malaria and to improve services for people living with HIV in the city. The 5,000 residents of Silvinos Lobos and the 13,000 people located in the surrounding areas live in difficult conditions of underdevelopment and marginalization due to the lack of most essential services. This mapping project will help the process of improving the area's water system.

#1129 Missing Maps: Leyte, Philippines

The Philippine Red Cross, with partners including the American Red Cross, continues Typhoon Haiyan recovery operations in Leyte. They will use the more accurate and complete data of these areas in the management and monitoring of their programs. The Philippines is regularly subject to natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes, and the data will also support preparedness initiatives and future disaster responses.

Through the MapGive project, the Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) of the U.S. Department of State is providing the OpenStreetMap community access to updated satellite imagery services to help assist with humanitarian mapping.

#1128 Peace Corps Mozambique -- Mocuba

The Peace Corps Education program in Mozambique is requesting assistance creating a basemap of Mocuba. The map will be used as the base for Field Paper activities within a youth map literacy and mapmaking program. The map will also be used by community members to identify geographic areas of interest for community development and aid efforts. More detailed basemap data (roads, villages, streets) is needed to assist the program.

#1117 Peace Corps Benin - Peonga

The Peace Corps Rural Community Health program in Benin is requesting assistance inventorying buildings and roads. A more detailed basemap is needed for use in testing, treating and tracking cases of malaria in children under five years of age. The map data will be used by the local health structure to display malaria trends in this highly vulnerable population. This project is being conducted under the scope of Peace Corps' innovative PECADOM+/ProACT pilot.

About the Tasking Manager

OSM Tasking Manager is a mapping tool designed and built for the Humanitarian OSM Team collaborative mapping. The purpose of the tool is to divide up a mapping job into smaller tasks that can be completed rapidly. It shows which areas need to be mapped and which areas need the mapping validated.

This approach facilitates the distribution of tasks to the various mappers in a context of emergency. It also permits control of the progress and the homogeneity of the work done (e.g. elements to cover, specific tags to use, etc.).

Just jump over to OpenStreetMap, create an account, and then visit the LearnOSM tutorials on the Tasking Manager and the iD editor. Alternatively check out the MapGive website which also provides information on the Tasking Manager and mapping. Once you have read up on how to map, come back here to help map for people on the ground!
