#2196 Hurricane Matthew: Haiti Sud Buildings

Opened for validation, low priority only to make the TM front page less confusing

  • Author: HOT
  • Requesting organization: Red Cross
  • Priority: Urgent

Buildings Only

Hurricane Matthew a category 4 hurricane is likely to hit the south west part of Haiti in the next 24 hours. The storm is projected to cause "life threatening". "Impacts, such as outer rainbands and some initial tropical storm-force gusts could begin in Jamaica and Hispañola (particularly Haiti) as soon as Sunday night, and in eastern Cuba as soon as Monday. This could make preparations difficult. Over a foot of rainfall from Matthew may trigger life threatening flash floods and mudslides. In Haiti in particular, heavy rainfall could be catastrophic."

This is the first task to map roads and existing villages and towns to enable a detailed risk assessment.

#2108 Can Tho Mapathon -- City Core and Suburbs

This task covers the core of Can Tho city and its surrounding suburbs. The Government of Vietnam and the World Bank are partnering to increase the city and province's resilience to flooding. Floods regularly affect the Mekong River Delta and Can Tho is one of the most populous cities in this already densely populated area.

This task is the first step towards creating a complete map of the province in OpenStreetMap. Map roads, landmarks and clearly visible buildings. Leave anything that's obscure or unclear!

This task will map all the roads, buildings and major landmarks.

#1901 Missing Maps: Saba Ward, Binga, Zimbabwe

  • Author: Missing Maps
  • Requesting Org: American and Zimbabwe Red Cross
  • Priority: Medium

Please follow instructions regarding mapping roads in this task.

Annual flooding and recurring drought have devastating impacts on communities in Southern Africa. In the Zambezi River basin, seasonal weather patterns often result in crop failure, shelter damage, livestock death, soil erosion and increased water and sanitation issues. Since late 2011, the American Red Cross has been working with communities in Binga district, Zimbabwe to identify and mitigate common hazards, as well as implement small-scale resilience projects such as latrine construction to improve household hygiene and building fuel-efficient cookstoves to reduce environmental degradation. At the same time, the American Red Cross is strengthening the capacity of the Zimbabwe Red Cross through trainings and community contingency planning support.

About the Tasking Manager

OSM Tasking Manager is a mapping tool designed and built for the Humanitarian OSM Team collaborative mapping. The purpose of the tool is to divide up a mapping job into smaller tasks that can be completed rapidly. It shows which areas need to be mapped and which areas need the mapping validated.

This approach facilitates the distribution of tasks to the various mappers in a context of emergency. It also permits control of the progress and the homogeneity of the work done (e.g. elements to cover, specific tags to use, etc.).

New to Mapping?

Just jump over to OpenStreetMap, create an account, and then visit the LearnOSM tutorials on the Tasking Manager and the iD editor. Alternatively check out the MapGive website which also provides information on the Tasking Manager and mapping. Once you have read up on how to map, come back here to help map for people on the ground!
